City of Farmington Hills Adults 50 & Better Division Receives Grant from Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families
The City of Farmington Hills Special Services Department Adults 50 & Better Division is pleased to announce its selection to receive a $500 grant from the Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families that will support funding for a new program, the Telling Room Project, this fall. The Telling Room Project is a series of workshops that will guide adult ages 50 and up through discovery of their life story, and transform it into multi-media dancework, accompanied by music, images, text and more.
“We’re honored that the Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families chose to support this unique program that will inspire creativity in our community,” said Marsha Koet, senior adult program supervisor for the City’s Adults 50 & Better Division. “This immersive exploration of storytelling through dance will enhance the offerings at the Costick Activities Center and allow participants to tap into their identity to preserve their legacy.”
In partnership with the Detroit Dance Collective, participants will explore the power of words, images, and movement to capture their life story and memories. During the workshops, participants will transform their storytelling moments into gestures, movement phrases, and language to be shaped into a multi-media dancework, bringing to life their personal narratives. This tapestry of dance, music, text, and image will be shared through a performance for the public, families, and friends at Costick Activities Center this fall.
The Telling Room Project workshops will meet 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Mondays from Sept. 9 through Oct. 28 at the Costick Activities Center, located at 28600 Eleven Mile Road. The program is open to participants of all physical abilities, including people needing an assistive device for mobility. The grant funding will allow the program to be offered at a discounted rate of $65 for residents of Farmington Hills and Farmington and $75 for non-residents.
