Farmington Hills City Manager Names Interim Police Chief

Assistant Chief John Piggott will serve as interim police chief beginning 
Monday, Dec. 16, as the City searches for a new Department leader

 

Farmington Hills City Manager Gary Mekjian announced today that current Assistant Police Chief John Piggott will serve as interim police chief beginning Monday, Dec. 16, upon the retirement of Police Chief Jeff King. 

 

“I am grateful that John has agreed to step into the role during this time of transition,” said City Manager Gary Mekjian. “He is an experienced law enforcement leader who is respected among his peers, and I’m confident that he will uphold the Department’s high standards while we take time to consider who will lead the Department in the future.”

 

Interim Chief Piggott has been a member of the Farmington Hills Police Department since 1996 when he was hired as a police cadet. Since that time, he has continued to rise through the ranks, gaining experience in administration, investigations, operations and traffic safety, serving as a school liaison officer, and being promoted to assistant chief in July 2021. In his career, Piggott has received 46 citations and awards for exceptional police work.

 

Piggott has a master’s degree in business administration from Madonna University, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Grand Valley State University and an associate degree from Oakland Community College. He is also a graduate of the Police Executives’ and New Chiefs’ School through the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, as well as the Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command.
