The Farmington Hills Police and Fire Departments are proud to come together to host the third annual “Blue, Red & You,” a free two-day workshop for women ages 19 and up who are interested in exploring careers as first responders. The exploratory career workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27 at the Farmington Hills Police Department located at 31655 W. Eleven Mile Road. Participants should plan to attend both days of the workshop.

 

“Women are an integral part of the Farmington Hills Police Department, helping to make the City of Farmington Hills one of the safest cities of its size in the state,” said Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King. “Policing is a historically male-dominated profession, and through this program, we hope to empower more women to join us on our mission of supporting this vibrant community.”

 

The City developed “Blue, Red & You” in 2022 to recruit more women for positions with the Police and Fire Departments, including firefighter/paramedics, police officers, police cadets and dispatchers.

 

“We want to show women that there is a place for them in firefighting and fire prevention,” said Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh. “Representation matters, so when prospective women firefighter/paramedics meet the women of the Farmington Hills Fire Department, they will be able see evidence of a fulfilling opportunity that exists for them in this community.”

 

The immersive two-day workshop will give participants the chance to network with and learn from the women of the Farmington Hills Police and Fire Departments, including working with evidence technicians, listen to incoming 911 calls with dispatchers, operating fire hoses and gear, comprehensive station tours and more. Attendees will also gain insight into education and training requirements, salary and benefits expectations, and potential shifts for different career paths.

 

“Opportunities like ‘Blue, Red & You’ underscore the City’s commitment to creating a positive work culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive,” said LaToya Harvey, director of diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and employee development for the City of Farmington Hills. “An important part of this work is moving past the idea of gendered professions and creating opportunities for all candidates to access the necessary resources to achieve professional success.”

Registration for “Blue, Red & You” is free and limited to 20 participants. Attendees should plan to attend both days of the program, at which lunch will be provided.
