Inspections
The City of Farmington Hills Building Division has streamlined the process for contractors and residents seeking building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing inspections. In the past, requests have gone to a phone line with voicemail messages relayed to inspectors. The inspection request phone line, 248-871-2460, is now de-activated and inspection requests are being accepted exclusively via the digital form available on this page.
Submitting inspection requests through the digital form helps streamline the process by improving message clarity and automatically recording the date and time of each request. Contractors and residents are required to provide the following information when completing the digital form located at the bottom of this page.
- Type of inspection (building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing)
- Permit number for the project
- Address for the inspection
- Preferred date for the inspection
- Contact phone number (optional if email correspondence is preferred)
Building Division staff will reply via email to all inspection requests.
Due to the high volume and complexity of the inspection process the city will no longer give estimated time of day for inspections. Inspections will be conducted on the approved scheduled day, Monday through Friday, between 8am and 4pm. The permit applicant or their appointed responsible party must make arrangement for safe access for the inspectors on the scheduled day. Failure to make arrangement for the inspectors will result in a failed inspection result and a $45 re-inspection fee will need to be paid before the re-inspection will be scheduled.
Common repairs or improvements that require a permit include sheds, roofing, siding, window replacement, sprinkler systems, sump pumps, furnaces, and air conditioners. Click here for a complete list of instances when a permit is required.
