East Middle School Contract Employee Arrested, Charged Following Inappropriate Contact with Student

Following an investigation by the Farmington Hills Police Department, a 25-year-old Oakland County resident has been arrested and charged with Accosting a Child for Immoral Purposes and Child Sexual Abusive Activity. Andre Brown is a resident of Wixom, Michigan.
 
Brown was a contract employee for the Farmington Public Schools, working as a hall monitor, basketball coach and cross country coach at East Middle School. While employed at the school, he developed relationships with students and eventually became involved in and participated in conversation threads with students on Snapchat. Brown initiated a private chat with a 13-year-old female student, in which he solicited inappropriate photos of the young girl. The student brought Brown’s conduct to the attention of a school counselor. The Farmington Hills Police Department was notified on Jan. 31 and a criminal investigation was immediately initiated.
 
The Farmington Hills Police Department and Farmington Public Schools have been working collaboratively through the investigative process with a commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for children and staff. It should be noted that the criminal activity occurred outside of school hours, while neither party was in Farmington Hills.
 
As a result of the outstanding work of investigators, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a two-count warrant, charging Brown with the following crimes:
 

  • One count of Child Sexual Abusive Activity (20-Year Felony)
  • One count of Accosting a Child for Immoral Purposes (4-Year Felony)

Brown was arraigned today before the 51st District Court. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf. The following conditions were ordered for pretrial release:
 

  • $25,000 10% cash/surety bond
  • No contact with minors
  • No contact with the victim
  • No social media
  • Must not return to East Middle School

Due to the nature and seriousness of the crimes, investigators are concerned that other children may have had similar experiences with Brown. The Farmington Hills Police Department takes allegations of abuse very seriously and they be will thoroughly investigated with the utmost concern for victims.
 
“I commend the courage of this student in recognizing the inappropriateness of the request made by the suspect, and her stepping forward to report the incident,” said Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King. “I encourage parents and guardians to maintain engagement in their children’s social media accounts and to have ongoing conversations about internet safety with their loved ones.”
