City of Farmington Hills Announces 2026 Construction Projects
The City of Farmington Hills is preparing for the 2026 construction season, which will include approximately $30 million in road and infrastructure improvements throughout the community. Projects will include major and local road reconstruction projects, as well as a water main replacement project, to maintain and improve the City’s critical infrastructure.
The water main replacement project began in late March, with the first road project starting earlier this month. Funding for the projects comes from several sources, including a federal grant, the 2018 and 2024 road millages, and the City’s water fund. This includes $18.9 million toward local road projects, $6.6 million for major road projects and $4.2 for water main improvements.
“Continually investing in the City’s infrastructure is essential to maintaining safe, reliable roads and utilities for community members, businesses and visitors,” said Jacob Rushlow, director of the City’s Public Services Department “These projects reflect the City’s mission to deliver best-in-class services that sustain a high quality of life in Farmington Hills.”
Prior to the start of construction for both local and major projects, the City will hold public information meetings for impacted community members. Residents in these areas will receive notification letters by mail with details about the project and meeting information.
Major projects for spring and summer 2026
This year, the City will start two major road projects, including the reconstruction of Halsted Road between 12 and 14 Mile Roads. Work will involve full reconstruction along a portion of the corridor and slab repairs in other areas. Construction is anticipated to begin April 15 and conclude in October.
Traffic will be maintained in one direction throughout construction in two stages. During Stage 1, northbound traffic will be maintained while southbound traffic will detour via Haggerty Road. In Stage 2, southbound traffic will be maintained, and northbound traffic will be detoured. This project will affect approximately 13,300 vehicle trips per day and will be a critical enhancement to the City’s infrastructure.
The second major project for 2026 is the reconstruction of Folsom Road from 9 Mile Road to Orchard Lake Road, including storm sewer improvements. This project is also expected to begin in April and be completed by October. Eastbound traffic will be maintained throughout construction to provide access to businesses and residents without alternate routes. Westbound traffic will be detoured via Freedom Road. The area sees approximately 4,700 vehicles per day.
Local projects for spring and summer 2026 include:
-
Biddestone Woods: This area will be converted from gravel to asphalt road east of Farmington Road, including a large culvert replacement for underground drainage. Culvert work began in mid-November 2025 and is currently in progress, with road construction to follow in this spring.
-
Farm Meadows and Camelot Court Subdivisions: This year is phase two of a project that was started in 2025. Crews will work to reconstruct concrete pavement and road base, including the east half of the Camelot Court subdivision.
-
Kendallwood No. 3 Subdivision: Water mains throughout the subdivision will be replaced, with construction expected to begin in late March.
-
Richland Gardens Subdivision Project Area: This year begins phase one of three in this project area, which includes reconstructing asphalt pavement and road base between Waldron Street and Oxford Avenue, north of Grand River Avenue and south of Shiawassee Road.
-
Ridgewood Drive: Ridgewood Drive east of Farmington Road and south of 11 Mile Road will be reconstructed with asphalt pavement and road base.
The City has created an online map that outlines all City-led projects, as well as Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) and Michigan Department of Transportation projects, including:
