City of Farmington Hills Yard Waste Pickup Ends Week of Dec. 14-18, Resumes Spring 2027

Posted:  11/06/2026

The City of Farmington Hills Department of Public Services Division of Public Works is reminding residents that the final yard waste pickup of the year is scheduled for the week of Dec. 14-18 on residents’ regular collection day.

“We encourage residents to take advantage of the final yard waste collection period and place leaves, twigs, and other yard waste at the curb before winter weather arrives. Due to the high volume of seasonal yard waste, collection may take an extra day in some neighborhoods, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as Priority Waste crews work to complete pickups,” said Derrick Schueller, Department of Public Works Superintendent.

There are four options for yard waste disposal in the City of Farmington Hills:

  • In the bag: Break down yard waste and fill brown paper yard waste bags that do not exceed 40 pounds to leave at your curb. Please do not overstuff bags as they must be rolled closed.  Yard waste in plastic trash bags won’t be collected.
  • In the can: Place yard waste in a trash can with a yard waste sticker on both sides. Yard waste stickers are available for free at City Hall or the DPW. These containers are limited to 35-gallon size.
  • Make a bundle: Brush and small limbs of six inches in diameter or smaller can be tied in bundles no longer than four feet in length and weighing no more than 60 pounds per bundle. Unbundled brush, large limbs and large quantities of dirt or sod will not be picked up.
  • Go green: Use a mulching mower to break down leaves and grass clippings to turn yard waste into eco-friendly lawn fertilizer.

Due to the significant volume of leaves and yard waste generated this time of year, collection may take longer than usual. If your yard waste has not been collected on your scheduled pickup day, please call the DPW at 248-871-2850. Residents' patience is appreciated as crews work to complete all collections safely and efficiently.

To minimize yard waste collection delays this fall, we kindly ask that you follow the Priority Waste guidelines for a smooth yard waste season. As a reminder, all yard waste must be out by 7 a.m. on the day of service.

Acceptable yard waste includes leaves, grass, shrub clippings, twigs and other plant materials, as long as it fits in your chosen container. Brush or twigs placed in cans or bags should not stick out above the top of the container.

In accordance with the City’s refuse contract, yard waste cannot be picked up after Dec. 18. Any accumulated yard waste should be stored until pickup resumes in the spring of 2027.
